Home contents insurance
Home contents insurance covers items in your home if they are damaged or stolen. This can include:
- damage caused by fire or water
- theft
- accidental damage
We recommend all tenants have contents insurance.
What’s covered
Contents insurance covers everything in the property you own, that is not part of the structure. This includes:
- furniture
- carpets
- curtains
- clothes
- electrical items
Some policies also cover losses such as frozen food in the event of electrical failure.
Why it’s important
Having contents insurance gives you added peace of mind if disaster does happen. If you were to lose everything, could you afford to replace it all? Even if you don’t think you have anything valuable, it all adds up and can be very costly to replace.
Picking the right policy
When choosing the right policy for you, we recommend you:
- get at least three quotes
- find a policy that covers all the items you want to protect
- make sure you can afford to pay the policy excess
Keep the receipts and take photos when you buy expensive items. These will help if you need to make a claim.
Furniture packs
If you pay for your carpets and white goods as part of a furniture pack, these are rented items and cannot be covered by contents insurance. We will replace items damaged by an accidental fire or leak, but you may be charged for damage caused by neglect or misuse.
