Regeneration of Parks and Open Spaces
Derby Homes and Derby City Parks are working together to improve local parks, recreation grounds and open spaces. We hope to provide better facilities and to encourage residents to use the spaces more often.
Six projects have been identified across the city:
- Sherwood Recreation Ground and Church Street Open Space
- Cheviot Street Open Space
- Sunnyhill Recreation Ground
- Stockbrook Recreation Ground
- Rykneld Recreation Ground
- Osmaston Park.
Redevelopment
The Sherwood Recreation Ground and Church Street Open Space play area was one of the first projects to be completed. Derby Homes Estates Pride, Single Regeneration Budget, URBAN II, Section 106 and Derby City Council Capital funded this project.
The Sherwood Recreation Ground
The play area has been refurbished to Locally Equipped Area for Play (LEAP) standards to cater for toddlers and juniors up to 12 years of age. More space is available for children to enjoy free play and fencing has been installed for extra security. A range of new equipment includes swings, multi play, springy animals and a roundabout. Seating and litter bins have also been provided.
Improvements to the Church Street Open Space
Similar to Sherwood Recreation ground, this area has been designed to LEAP standards for toddlers and juniors up to 14 years of age. This area has also been fenced and more space for play and equipment has been made available. Children from local schools helped with artwork used in the design of the fencing and pathways. Local residents were also involved in the planning and maintenance of the area.
Sussex Circus redevelopment
A planning application was submitted in 2006 for large-scale improvements to Sussex Circus. Planning was granted and improvement work was completed with funding from Derby Homes Estates Pride and Derwent New Deal for Communities.
Refurbishment work will be carried out to some of Derby Homes play areas in 2012
Areas to benefit from this work, funded through Estates Pride are Oriel Court, Lord Street, Inverary Close, We are also applying for match funding for Oriel Court play area.

The major external improvement work has been carried out by Derby Homes Regeneration team using Estates Pride funding, and is one of the many projects the team have to carry out large scale work on.
The scheme has benefited from new tarmac paths, block paving to front and rear, returfing, recyclable fencing and landscaping work.
