The Derby Homes Neighbourhood Safety Team won the Social Landlords Crime and Nuisance Group’s (SLCNG) 2010 Award for exemplary practice by a team in resolving ASB incidents or issues in a specific neighbourhood and delivering measurable results. They created a training DVD that delivers a powerful message about anti social behaviour and learning disabilities.
The DVD is a dramatisation of the Fiona Pilkington case, and was written, acted out and produced by staff from the Derby Homes Neighbourhood Safety Team. It’s a must-have training tool that creates awareness amongst staff that it is everyone’s responsibility to be alert to signs that a tenant is suffering from anti social behaviour. This could be any member of staff who is visiting a property and sees signs of ASB or is told things by tenants. When this happens, the information should be reported to the Neighbourhood Safety Team so that support can be offered to the tenant.
This style of training is an innovative way of delivering a highly emotive subject to a wide ranging audience. The dramatisation is based on the actual events of the Pilkington case so, at times, the message it delivers is profound and thought-provoking. It is delivered using the actions and language as reported in the case, which generates an emotional response from audiences.
