Gas Safety

DERBY HOMES IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CARRYING OUT AN ANNUAL GAS SAFETY CHECK TO ALL DERBY CITY COUNCIL PROPERTIES.

THIS IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT, EVEN IF THERE ARE NO GAS APPLIANCES IN YOUR HOME.

We have a legal duty to make sure that all our appliances are checked every year by Corgi registered gas engineers. We will also service any appliances at the same time.

Under your conditions of tenancy, you must allow staff into your home to carry out gas safety checks.

This section lets you know the name of our current contractor and the time of year they will be in your area.

Keep your appointment

Appointments

We will write to you when your gas safety check is due. The letter will be individually addressed to you and will let you know when we are in your area.

If you are out when our contractors call, they will leave you a calling card. Simply ring the number on the card to arrange an appointment.

Please telephone our contractor on freephone 0800 085 0323 if you need a specific appointment.

They will be happy to arrange this with you.

Appointments are available:
• Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm
• Saturday 8am to 12noon.

Occasionally our contractors don't arrive when they say they will. If this happens we will send you a written apology and re-arrange your appointment within 48 hours or at a time convenient to you.

Your own gas appliances

If you wish to connect any of your own gas appliances, you will need a permit from your local housing office. You will also need to arrange for a suitably qualified gas installer to carry out the work. Qualified gas installers should be CORGI registered – please check your local Thomson Directory or Yellow Pages.

To connect or disconnect your gas supply, please contact your gas supplier. They will need around 48 hours notice to arrange the work. You will be responsible for any charges.

Gas appliances need a flue and adequate fresh air, to work safely. Do not block air vents. Faulty appliances can give off poisonous carbon monoxide fumes.

You can't see or smell carbon monoxide gas, but it can kill. Faulty appliances can also cause  explosions.

Gas can kill

If you smell gas:

• immediately turn off the incoming gas supply at the meter
• open windows to ventilate the area
• call TRANSCO on 0800 111 999.

Do not:

• use your mobile phone inside the house
• use your intercom system
• switch on or off any lights or electrical switches as this could cause an explosion
• smoke.

Repairs

Please report repairs to our Enquiry Centre on 01332 711000. You can telephone between :
• Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm
• Saturday 8am to 12noon.

If you have an emergency when the Enquiry Centre is closed, please call Care Link on 01332 256060.
