EID AND DIWALI CELEBRATIONS COME TO DERBY HOMES - OCT 2006

Derby Homes will be holding celebrations on Friday 3 November to mark the Hindu festival of Diwali and the Islamic holiday of Eid.

Between 12pm and 2pm, Derby Homes staff at Cardinal Square offices will have the opportunity to eat mouth-watering Asian cuisine, listen to presentations on Eid and Diwali, try on traditional Asian dress, eat Asian sweets and enter raffles to raise money for local charities.

Eid and Diwali are significant occasions in the Islamic and Hindu calendars and are celebrated across the globe. Eid occurs at the end of Ramadan - the holy month of fasting - and Diwali - or ‘festival of lights’ – signifies the victory of good over evil and is traditionally a time to strengthen family and social relationships.

The Mayor of Derby will officially open the festivities at 12pm and staff, city councillors, contractors and board members will join in the celebrations.

Phil Davies, Chief Executive of Derby Homes said: “Many members of our staff and community will be rejoicing during Eid and Diwali and we wanted to do something special to commemorate these important events. This is a great opportunity to recognise the diversity of our society and learn a little more about other cultures.”

The festivities will have an informal and relaxed atmosphere and staff will be encouraged to dress in non-work clothes. All proceeds raised during the day will go to charities chosen by staff. Local companies will provide food for the buffet.
