TENANTS DIRECT SERVICE SPENDING AT DERBY HOMES - OCT 2006

Tenants in Council homes across Derby were invited to help guide future spending on services for tenants during a recent Budget Consultation Conference.

The meeting, held on Tuesday 26 September, was the first of its kind run by Derby Homes, the organisation that manages and maintains Derby City Council properties. The conference provided tenants, leaseholders and board members with an opportunity to speak out about the key service areas they wanted funds allocated to.

Ken Whitehead, a Derby Homes tenant, said: “I recently attended Derby Homes’ budget consultation process, which I found most informative. It gave me a better understanding of how funding was obtained and how Derby Homes worked out its budget. I was also pleased that in using this process, Derby Homes was fully committed to full consultation with its tenants."

The session was successful in encouraging greater tenant involvement in the setting of the annual budget. Presentations explained the budget’s structure and tenants were informed of the steps being taken to make savings and improve efficiency.

Attendees welcomed the opportunity to get involved and provided valuable feedback, including suggestions to continue the consultation process via workshops, forums, training events and specialist publications.
