DERBY HOMES TRAIN HOUSING PROFESSIONALS OF THE FUTURE - August 2006

Derby Homes is taking an active role in the training of future housing professionals by awarding paid placements to Sheffield Hallam University students on the BA (Hons) Housing Professional Studies degree.

A Sheffield Hallam University student is recruited each year to benefit from the expert support and practical guidance offered by Derby Homes. Undergraduates spend the third year of their course in paid employment to gain vital on ‘the job’ training.

Student trainees who have received support from Derby Homes are achieving outstanding results:

• Rachel Harcula was awarded a first class degree and has now secured employment with Derwent Living, a Derby based housing association.
• Kiran Singh successfully completed a one-year placement at Derby Homes during his third year.
• Stephanie McKoy produced work to a high standard during her second year and obtained a mark equal to an upper second-class degree.
• Anna Harvey completed year one of her degree with an average mark of 70%; putting her on course to achieve a first class degree.

Derby homes offer a comprehensive training programme. Placements within local housing offices in year one provide students with practical experience to compliment their academic studies. Students in year three are introduced to all aspects of housing management work. This year long placement is vital to the trainees’ future career. Without gaining professional experience provided by Derby Homes, students would not be eligible to apply for corporate membership of the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Kiran Singh, Housing Management student, said “My year placement has been very beneficial for me. I have learnt a great deal and have gained valuable hands-on experience within the Housing sector. All these skills gained will be very useful for me when I return to University for my final year, and I’m sure it would give me a great head start for my career prospects.”

Phil Davies, Chief Executive of Derby Homes and an active supporter of the partnership said “It is a privilege to work with the students, over many years, and we are pleased to announce their successes for the last academic year – a year in which Derby Homes achieved the highest Audit Commission rating of 3* with excellent prospects of improvement for the second time.
