Estates Pride Update

Estates Pride is a £15 million 5 year programme of identifying estate based improvements and community iniatives to enhance the quality of life for residents in areas of Council Housing.

Derby Homes can now announce that year 1 spending for Estates Pride has now been approved by the Local Housing Boards, Derby City Council Cabinet and the Local Area Agreement Strategic Group. The following projects have been developed following consultation with our Stakeholder Events held in 2005.

Neighbourhood Working

This is a new DCC initiative whereby all public services are to be delivered at a local level through Neighbourhood Teams in Osmaston/Allenton, Stockbrook, Normanton, Sinfin and Austin. The Teams will include a NEAT (Neighbourhood and Environmental Action Team), whose aims will be to enhance the local environment by removing fly-tipping, litter picking and graffiti removal. Estates Pride are part funding Neighbourhood working in the 5 Priority areas and expand the schemes into other areas. In addition, there will be a Community Safety Worker allocated to each of the priority areas. The CSW aims to reduce levels of crime, anti-social behaviour and promote community engagement. The overall project will be integrated into the Community Safety Partnership.

Youth Inclusion Project

Estates Pride will be providing £1 million over the next 5 years to fund this project. The Community Safety Partnership and tenants have recognised a need to deliver youth inclusion programmes to be delivered to key priority neighbourhoods. YIPs are the most effective means of targeting intensive preventative interventions to those young people most at risk of offending and causing ASB. Each YIP will engage 50 of the most at risk young people, aged 12 - 16 years in each area and provide youth clubs and learning opportunities.

Capital environmental Improvements

Estates Pride have identified capital environmental works in the Stockbrook Street area, and will be shortly identifying works to be carried out in other Derby Homes Estates over the next five years. The works will include fencing, lighting, landscaping, tree work, parking improvements, pathways and many other improvements. Where improvements to open space are planned, we will be working with the Parks department to joint fund new projects.

Over the duration of the programme, Estates pride will focus initially on 70's estates, including flats, followed by 50's estates, including traffic calming, and finally pre-war estates, concentrating on areas of low demand. We will conduct a review of investment needed on the pre-war estates to improve long term sustainability and demand. We anticipate that 3 million will
be spent on each of these property types.

All the above will involve consultation with Community Panels, Local Councillors and local Residents
