commitment to safety

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) and Derby Homes have reaffirmed their commitment to safety through a number of targeted campaigns and activities. A review of last years fire statistics has been undertaken and a marked decrease has been found.

This reinforces not onlyDerby Homes commitmentto keeping their tenants safe, but also safe guarding the housing stock. An issue that both organisations are mindful of is the increase in fuel prices, approximately 65% rise in both Gas and Electricity. As part of the DFRS ‘Home Fire Safety Check’ scheme, fire crews and Housing Officers are monitoring how tenants are heating their homes. Whilst all properties have either gas or electric fires and central heating, tenants may be using what they consider to be cheaper sources of heating; bottled gas heaters, paraffin heaters, etc.

Whilst these forms of heating may be seen as safe, the risk due to their port ability and the naked flame means that the potential for them to cause a fire is greatly increased. Where these heat sources are found, we are strongly recommending that the tenant use the heating appliances as provided in their home. Savings on electricity and gas consumption can be made through other  energy efficiency measures; not leaving the television on stand by, keeping internal doors shut for example.

Tenants are reminded that the DFRS Home Fire Safety Check scheme is available to all tenants. Fire Crews will visit you in your home and talk about fire safety covering the key areas of escape plans, fire prevention, and the care and maintenance of your smoke alarm. The talk takes approx 30 minutes and can be booked by ringing Amanda Wright on 01332 345440.

To finish, DFRS would like to thank all of the staff and tenants of Derby Homes for their help in reducing the incidence of fires in the area.

This reduction enables the Service to continue to target its resources to preventative work that may potentially save the lives and property of others. It was with great pride that the service received the Lionel Massingham partnership award and we will continue to work towards making Derbyshire a ‘Safer place to live, work and visit.’
