Derby Homes is Proud to be an Investor in People
In May 2006, Derby Homes successfully achieved the Investor in People (IIP) standard for the second time.
We previously achieved IIP in November 2002. Since then, the standard has changed and the criteria for achieving this prestigious award has become much tougher.
What is IIP?
IIP is a widely respected national standard that sets out a level of best practice for developing people to achieve business objectives.
The standard provides a framework for improving performance and competitiveness, through a planned approach to setting and communicating organisational objectives. A key feature of IIP is developing people to meet these objectives. IIP promotes the culture of continuous improvement.
What did Derby Homes do to meet the standard?
Many things that help to show our commitment to developing our employees have been embedded in the culture for some time. These include:
• the inclusion of everyone in the annual service planning process
• twice yearly Achievement and Development interviews between employees and their line manager
• a comprehensive annual training programme
• funding and time off to gain relevant external qualifications
• annual team away days
• regular team meetings.
In addition to these, to ensure that we achieved the new standard, Derby Homes introduced new measures which placed greater emphasis on effective leadership and management.
The first step we took was to introduce our own Leadership Charter.

The next step we took was to develop, in partnership with DCC, a bespoke Leadership Training Programme for all our managers. This programme was designed around the principles of our Leadership Charter.
More recently, we worked in partnership with Derby University to carry out a 360 degree feedback scheme for all our managers. This gave managers the chance to receive constructive feedback from a range of colleagues on all aspects of their performance.
What Next?
Derby Homes is proud to be an Investor in People. We will continue to show our commitment to achieving our goals through the development of our employees and ensure that we maintain the right to display the IIP kitemark.
